LinksThe following organizations provide information, assistance, and support that may be useful to TAPS clients and to members of the anti-poverty community in and around Victoria, BC. POVNET - National site based in BC providing many valuable resources for the anti-poverty community. Current news stories are updated frequently; analysis of laws and policy is comprehensive, and many links are provided to advocates across the province. The Law Centre (Victoria, BC. - UVic law students, supervised by senior lawyers, provide free legal assistance on criminal, civil, and family matters as well as human rights, social assistance, disability benefits, and landlord/tenant disputes. Community Legal Assistance Society (CLAS) (Vancouver, BC) - CLAS can assist with EI apeals, WCB appeals, judicial reviews of welfare appeals, and charitable tax law issues. It also litigates test cases and seeks to reform laws in all areas of law relating to the economically, socially, physically, and mentally disadvantaged. 604.682.3425 BC Human Rights Tribunal - An independent, quasi-judicial body created by the BC Human Rights Code. It is responsible for accepting, screening, mediating and adjudicating human rights complaints. BC Human Rights Coalition - Promotes public education about human rights issues throughout BC, works to improve and enforce human rights legislation and advocates for individuals with human rights complaints. Canadian Centre for Policy Alternatives - This alternative policy think tank focuses on issues of social and economic justice. It has produced various studies dealing with poverty in BC. This BC government web site provides detailed information on employment and assistance facts and eligibility. |
